What you can offer in your practice

  • Upper-face expression lines

Glabella, forehead and crow's feet, the most requested aesthetic treatment in practice.

  • Lower third and neck

Chin, mouth corners, platysmal bands and masseter, according to your judgment and training.

  • Combined protocols

The foundation of a harmonization with fillers and biostimulators in the same visit.

  • Scheduled maintenance

A treatment patients come back for: a follow-up schedule that builds loyalty.

What it is and how it works

Neuronox binds to the motor nerve terminal and inhibits the release of acetylcholine. In this way it blocks neuromuscular transmission and relaxes the treated muscle. The effect is reversible: the nerve regenerates and transmission recovers.1

It is a type A toxin complex of approximately 900 kDa, Hall strain, as a lyophilized powder with human albumin and sodium chloride.2 Outside Korea it is also marketed as Meditoxin, Botulift, Siax, Acebloc and Cunox.3

Technical data

Manufacturer
Medytox Inc., South Korea
Active ingredient
Botulinum toxin type A, Hall strain
Presentation
100 U vial, lyophilized powder
Excipients
0.5 mg of human albumin and 0.9 mg of sodium chloride per vial
Storage
2 to 8 °C, or frozen between −15 and −5 °C
Shelf life
36 months from manufacture
Diluent
Preservative-free 0.9% saline solution

Reconstitution and glabellar injection

  1. Reconstitute

Inject the 0.9% saline solution slowly, without foaming. If the vial's vacuum does not draw in the diluent, discard it.1

  2. Dilute according to the area

In the package insert, 50 U in 1.25 ml gives 4 U per 0.1 ml. For the 100 U vial, the same concentration is achieved with 2.5 ml. Confirm this with the insert in your box.1

  3. Inject the glabella

20 U in total, with a 30G needle: 5 injections of 0.1 ml (4 U per point), two in each corrugator and one in the procerus. Inject at least 1 cm above the orbital rim and away from the levator palpebrae.1

  4. Respect the timing

Use the reconstituted vial within 24 hours, refrigerated at 2–8 °C, in a single patient. Allow at least 3 months between sessions, using the lowest effective dose.1

Value for your practice

Why professionals choose it

  • Flexible storageRefrigerated or frozen, with a 36-month shelf life: more leeway to manage your inventory.13
  • Familiar formulationA ~900 kDa complex with albumin and sodium chloride, the same class of formulation as the reference toxin.2
  • Head-to-head comparisonNon-inferior to onabotulinumtoxinA in glabellar lines, crow's feet, blepharospasm and cerebral palsy, in published trials.4567
  • Documented safety profile0.49% related reactions in post-marketing pharmacovigilance for glabellar lines (812 patients, 2011–2015), with no serious events.1

Evidence and support

  • Won CH et al. Dermatologic Surgery, 2013.
Phase III in glabellar lines, 314 patients, 20 U: 93.7% response at week 4 versus 94.5% with onabotulinumtoxinA, with no differences at weeks 8, 12 and 16. The article describes the product as a toxin of the same strain; it corresponds to Medytox's registration trial.4
  • Lim JH et al. Journal of Dermatological Treatment, 2021.
Crow's feet, 220 patients in phase III, 24 U: 83% response with Neuronox and with onabotulinumtoxinA; non-inferior and with similar safety.5
  • Yoon JS, Kim JC, Lee SY. Korean Journal of Ophthalmology, 2009.
    Essential blepharospasm, 60 patients: non-inferior to onabotulinumtoxinA.6

Indications and safety

Indications

Approved by the Korean regulator (MFDS): moderate to severe glabellar lines in adults aged 20 to 65; moderate to severe crow's feet (approved in 2019); essential blepharospasm; equinus foot due to spasticity in cerebral palsy; upper limb spasticity after stroke.113 In Costa Rica, the indications in its sanitary registration apply.

Onset and duration of effect

In the glabella, the effect begins 1 to 2 days after injection, increases during the first week and lasts about 3 to 4 months, according to the package insert.1 Response varies from patient to patient.

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to any of the components; neuromuscular junction disorders (myasthenia gravis, Lambert-Eaton syndrome, ALS); pregnancy and breastfeeding. Use caution with aminoglycosides, muscle relaxants, anticholinergics and other drugs that affect neuromuscular transmission.1

Adverse events

In the phase III glabellar trial, 10.9% related reactions (eyelid ptosis 3.2%). In post-marketing pharmacovigilance, 0.49% (headache 0.25%), with no serious events. Class warning: possible distant spread of toxin effect.1
